Planning a wedding is both exciting and, let’s be honest, a tad overwhelming. While traditional hen dos often involve late-night partying and cocktails, there’s a growing trend toward wellness events that focus on relaxation, rejuvenation, and inner peace.
I recently had the pleasure of attending such an event — a wellness retreat organised by Only Human UK at the serene Loch Fyne — and it was an amazing experience. This was my second time here and it was lovely to see a few faces from last year back again too.
A Scenic Journey
The day began with an early morning (3 hour) drive from Moffat to Loch Fyne. We made a quick stop for tea and food just outside Dumbarton. We passed Loch Lomond, Loch Long, and Loch Fyne on the drive and the scenery was lovely despite the misty weather. The final stretch to Otterburn was along a single-track road, offering stunning views of the loch for those fortunate enough to be passengers.
Arrival at the Retreat
We arrived at the lovely smallholding in Otterburn, then set off to the tranquil setting of the dome overlooking Loch Fyne. The retreat began with a facial massage session led by Clare from Only Human UK. The session included lymphatic draining, fascia manipulation and some reiki energy. It was an incredibly relaxing way to start the day.
Embracing Nature
Following the facial massage, we headed on a 15-minute walk to Loch Fyne for a cold water dip. The weather remained dry, allowing us to fully enjoy the experience and I managed to stay in the water for three minutes, the invigorating dip was followed by a soothing sauna session, with perfect views of the Loch and a welcome chance to warm up.
A Nourishing Feast
Reenergised, we returned to Otterburn for a healthy, freshly prepared lunch using home-grown, seasonal ingredients. We enjoyed soup, homemade bread, feta and courgette frittatas, couscous with pomegranate and parsley, and tomatoes drizzled with olive oil. Although I skipped the asparagus and broccoli, the frittatas were a surprising favourite considering I am such a fussy eater.
Sound Bath Serenity
The afternoon was dedicated to a sound bath with Michelle from Reiki Love Club. This immersive experience was the perfect way to unwind further, allowing us to lie back, relax, and let go of any lingering stress. The day ended with delicious homemade cake and herbal tea, leaving us feeling refreshed and at peace as we headed home.
A Unique Hen Party Experience
For brides-to-be seeking an alternative to the traditional hen do, a wellness retreat like this offers an unparalleled experience. It was a day filled with laughter, relaxation, and friendly company, providing the perfect opportunity to connect with others while nurturing mind and body. If you’re looking for a different kind of pre-wedding celebration, a wellness retreat might just be the perfect choice.
